Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary reopens for tourist season in India

Mahouts with their elephants wait for tourists during the re-opening of Pobitora wildlife sanctuary that was closed to tourists due to the monsoon season in Morigaon district of of Assam, India on Oct. 20, 2023. The wildlife sanctuary, known to have the highest density of the one-horned rhinoceros, was formally opened by Assam forest minister Chandramohan Patowary. Pobitora is a dream destination of ardent wildlife lovers and nature enthusiasts. The park is set in the Morigaon district, some 48 km from Guwahati in Assam. One can reach here in an hour’s drive via road passing by the River Brahmaputra. The place was declared a reserved forest in 1971 and a wildlife sanctuary in 1987.Besides, Pobitora is also home to nearly 2000 migratory birds, a huge number of reptiles and other wild animals including leopards, wild boars, elephants, barking deer and wild buffaloes, among others.
