Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary reopens for tourist season in India

Mahouts and their elephants are present during the re-opening of the Pobitora wildlife sanctuary in the Morigaon district of Assam, India on Oct. 20, 2023. The sanctuary, which has a significant number of one-horned rhinoceroses, was inaugurated for the season by Assam forest minister Chandramohan Patowary. Located about 48 km from Guwahati in Assam, Pobitora was designated a reserved forest in 1971 and became a wildlife sanctuary in 1987. The sanctuary is also a habitat for migratory birds, reptiles, and other animals such as leopards, wild boars, elephants, barking deer, and wild buffaloes.
