Thousands of people gathered in Gdansk on Saturday, January 13, 2024 to commemorate former mayor Pawel Adamowicz who was murdered five years ago. The attack, captured live on television, stunned Poland, and prompted accusations from then opposition politicians that the alleged incendiary language of some of the country's leaders and pro-government media might have influenced the murderer. On January 13, 2019, Pawel Adamowicz, one of Poland's longest-serving mayors, was attacked and stabbed on stage during one of Poland's biggest annual charity events, the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, and died the following day.
