SRINAGAR, INDIA

Muharram Commenced in Kashmir, India.

Kashmiri Shia Muslims prepare a tall religious flag to install on a road during Muharram. Muharram commenced in Kashmir with deep reverence, especially among the Shia Muslim community, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in the Battle of Karbala. The first ten days, culminating in Ashura, feature solemn processions where mourners dressed in black carry banners and perform rhythmic chest-beating. Majlis gatherings are held where religious scholars recount the events of Karbala, and emotional Marsiya recitations are common. Intricately crafted Taziyahs and Alam standards, symbolizing the Islamic holy book Quran, banners and flags of the Karbala martyrs, are carried through the streets, embodying a profound sense of grief and devotion.
