South Korean Students Protest Outside U.S. Embassy, Demand Apology

12 members of The Korean University Students Progressive Union staged a protest outside the U.S. Embassy on Friday, January 10, 2025, in Seoul, South Korea. They held banners that read, 'Apologize for supporting Han Duck-soo, agent of treason,' 'Retract and apologize for labeling Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung a criminal,' and 'Request for student meeting.' The protesters condemned U.S. support for Han Duck-soo, who served as the prime minister under impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol. Yoon was removed from office after declaring an unconstitutional martial law, and Han Duck-soo, who was also impeached for his role in the administration, faced criticism for his actions during that period. The demonstrators chanted slogans demanding an official apology from the U.S. and an immediate end to what they described as meddling in South Korea’s domestic affairs. Police intervened, confiscated the banners, and detained the protesters, escorting them onto a police bus as the demonstration ended.
