The Oriental Psyche (Leptosia nina) is a small white butterfly belonging to the Pieridae family. It can be found in the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Australia, typically flying low over grass due to its weak flight. This butterfly seeks shelter under leaves during rain and heavy wind to protect its wings, particularly during the monsoon season. For example, on July 09, 2025, it was observed taking refuge under leaves in Tehatta, West Bengal, India. In addition to leaves, the butterfly also finds shelter in tall grasses or in crevices of rocks and trees, which is similar to its roosting behaviour at night. While butterflies can manage to fly in light rain, heavy rain poses a significant challenge, as the weight of the water on their wings makes flying difficult.
