Weaver ants are highly territorial and actively defend their territories against intruding insects, including other ant species. Ants do attack other ants, often engaging in fierce battles for resources like food, nesting sites, and territory. They often employ group attacks to capture larger prey. Weaver ants are formidable predators with strong mandibles and the ability to spray formic acid. When encountering an ant, they may attack, bite, and dismember their victim. Here, a slender ant (Tetraponera) is attacked and held with bites on every part of its body by a group of Weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina) in a forest at Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on 06/06/2025.
