A golden jackal (Canis aureus) is coming to the locality next to the forest and is lying on a drain running alongside a tubewell in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on July 18, 2025. The jackal's sleeping face looks like it is dreaming. It is waking up and is looking in all directions with alert eyes. A sleeping jackal in a neighborhood can be a dangerous situation, as jackals are wild, opportunistic predators that may attack humans, especially if they feel provoked or threatened. During the day, jackals are seeking shelter in holes, among ruins, or in dense vegetation to hide from predators or the heat. A drain could offer a similar refuge, providing a cooler spot to rest.
