Carpenter ants (Camponotus spp.) prey on an earthworm - Animal India

Carpenter ants (Camponotus spp.) prey on earthworms, primarily targeting dead or weakened ones. Healthy earthworms, covered in mucus, are often avoided by Carpenter ants due to their protective coating, which defends against ant predation. While Carpenter ants' primary diet consists of sugars from honeydew and other sweet substances, ants are also known to scavenge prey worms. Here, a Carpenter ant is carrying a piece of a dead earthworm, four times its own weight in prey, on a house floor, at Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on 27/07/2025.
