An Indian ginger cat, or orange street cat, is sitting on the wall next to the kitchen window, expecting food, and is occasionally looking around curiously and trying to sniff in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on September 14, 2025. Recent studies by researchers in the U.S. and Japan are identifying a deletion in the ARHGAP36 gene as the cause of orange fur in cats. This gene is located on the X chromosome, and its inactivation is leading to lighter pigmentation in the cells that determine fur color.
