Giant honey bee (Apis dorsata) - Honey - Animal India - Honeycomb - 05/01/2026

The giant honey bee (Apis dorsata) is a wild species of large honey bee found in South and Southeast Asia and is crucial for pollinating crops like cotton, mango, and coffee. They are often building open nests on trees or buildings, with a colony storing 4 to 6 kg of honey. Known for its strong flavor and medicinal properties, the honey produced is rich in antioxidants and vitamins, making it a natural remedy for colds and immunity support. This sustainable honey is typically being harvested from wild, high-altitude hives. A giant honey bee sting is causing intense pain and localized swelling, but can also lead to severe reactions like anaphylaxis, organ damage, or dangerous clotting. Notably, a newly grown honeycomb is being found full of bees at the Primaryschool construction near the India-Bangladesh border fence, and the headmaster is therefore putting up a temporary net in front of the window with the beehive so that the children cannot touch it in any way in Nabin Nagar, West Bengal, on May 1, 2026.
