Lycid beetles, also known as net-winged beetles (Lycidae), are frequently observed during the rainy season and in humid, forested environments of Nearctic, Palearctic, Neotropical, Afrotropical, Oriental, and Australian ecoregions. They are known for their bright orange, red, and black coloration, which serves as a warning to predators of their toxic and distasteful nature. Some adults feed on nectar, while others do not during their short adult lifespans. During the rainy season, high winds and heavy rain often cause in-flight collisions or damage to their wings. As adults, these beetles cannot repair broken wings. While broken wings mean the beetle likely cannot fly, Lycid beetles are toxic and often avoid predation, allowing them to survive for a time on the ground.
