Plastic pollution in the Himalaya

Plastic waste, including bottles, lies scattered beside a resort at Padamchen, Sikkim, India, on April 19, 2026. The Himalayan Cleanup (THC) 2024 report indicates that over 80% of waste in the Himalayan foothills originates from single-use food and beverage packaging, such as chip packets and PET bottles. Over 70% to 71% of this waste is non-recyclable, largely composed of multi-layered plastics (MLP) and tetrapaks, significantly impacting eco-sensitive regions like Ladakh, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand.
