Macaca Nigra Endemic Animal Endengered

Motorists traveling along the Trans-Sulawesi Highway feed *Macaca nigra*—the Sulawesi crested macaque, an endemic and protected species—in Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi, on Saturday (July 11, 2026). Data from the Central Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) indicate a drastic decline in the Sulawesi crested macaque population in recent years, resulting in its classification under Appendix II (threatened with extinction). Contributing factors include rampant poaching and a behavioral shift in the macaques; instead of foraging within the forest, they now wait for food from passing motorists, making these endemic animals easier to approach and hunt.
