Northern plains grey langurs Grooming (Allogrooming) - Social Bonding - 07/24/2026

Northern plains grey langurs (Semnopithecus entellus), also known as Hanuman langurs or Bengal sacred langurs, socialize within structured groups called troops by engaging with females and their offspring, dominant males, and playful juveniles. Grey langur social grooming, known as allogrooming, is performed mostly by adult females, who actively clean and tend to other troop members to build social bonds. They perform over 60% of all grooming to maintain hygiene, reduce stress, and strengthen social bonds. The grooming involves removing dirt and parasites, such as ticks and lice, while fostering trust and harmony within the group. Grooming is essential for bonding, especially among related females, and helps calm the troop during resting and non-feeding times. Northern plains grey langurs are observed grooming in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on July 24, 2026.
