Water supply in India

Irregular water supply is a common issue in India, caused by aging infrastructure, groundwater depletion, distribution losses, and mismanagement. Urban and rural areas often receive piped water only a few hours daily or on alternate days. In remote rural regions, drinking water scarcity is exacerbated by irregular government-provided supplies. To cope, some have improvised by hanging a bucket from a tap over a larger basin, ensuring both fill whenever water flows, securing a supply for their families at Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on August 11, 2026.
