Master artisans create clay idols for the Durga festival in Kumartuli, northern Kolkata, India, on August 8, 2026. Craftsmen construct structures using bamboo and straw, coating them with sacred clay harvested from the Hooghly River. The clay is applied in multiple layers, and once shaped, the idols are dried in open lanes and hand-painted to capture expressive facial features. The finished pratimas are carefully packed and shipped to communities across the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia.
