Tikehau Airport is one of the most uniquely laid-back and minimalistic transit hubs in the world. The airport operates with zero high-tech luxury. It has no control tower, no instrument approach system, and no runway lighting. Because there are no runway lights, airplanes can only land and take off during daylight hours. The terminal building is essentially just a large, open-air wooden shelter with a thatched roof. There are no doors, gates, or digital security lines. Passengers wait on simple benches completely exposed to the warm tropical breezes. Despite its remote nature and tiny size, the airport handles roughly 40,000 passengers a year.
