World Mosquito Day - Prevention of mosquito bites

World Mosquito Day is observed on August 20 to honor Sir Ronald Ross's 1897 discovery in India that female mosquitoes transmit malaria. Mosquitoes are the most dangerous animals in the world. It causes over 700,000 deaths each year. The day raises awareness of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, chikungunya, and Zika, highlighting the importance of community prevention, vector control, and the vital use of mosquito nets as a low-cost barrier to stop deadly bites. Aggressive daytime-biting mosquitoes like Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus begin their blood meal on humans. A mosquito net is hung in a house to protect children and elderly women from mosquito bites in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on August 20, 2026.
