Daily wage labor in India - Mason - Life Risk - Indian Economy

Mason workers, also known as 'karigars' or 'mistris', are vital members of India's construction sector. They construct brick walls, lay stones, mix mortar, carry out plastering and masonry, handle masonry ironwork, build frameworks, and perform ceramic tiling, among other construction tasks. Their work is physically demanding, and they often face uncertainties regarding daily wages and seasonal migration. Here, masons are constructing a three-story plastering concrete brick wall, working precariously while standing on an unstuck concrete sunshade, without any support and sometimes using a bamboo makeshift platform without any safety equipment in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on August 22, 2026.
