Polish Teachers Rally Outside PM's Chancellery Over Stalled Pay Reform

Members of the Polish Teachers' Union (ZNP) and education workers hold placards during a rally outside the Chancellery of the Prime Minister in Warsaw, Poland, on August 31, 2026. The union organizes the demonstration, under the slogan "Politicians, keep your word!" ("Politycy, dotrzymajcie słowa!"), to protest the government's failure to act on a long-stalled civic bill that would tie teachers' salaries to the average national wage. The legislation, "Dignified Pay and High Prestige for Teachers," awaits a second reading in the Sejm for more than two years despite a 2023 pledge by the governing coalition and a 2024 promise by Prime Minister Donald Tusk to accelerate the process. ZNP represents more than 600,000 education workers and says the government's 2027 proposal of a 3 percent pay increase falls far short of its demands.
