Mason workers, also known as 'karigars' or 'mistris', are vital members of India's construction sector. They construct brick walls, lay stones, mix mortar, carry out plastering and masonry, handle masonry ironwork, build frameworks, and perform ceramic tiling, among other construction tasks. Their work is physically demanding, and they often face uncertainties regarding daily wages and seasonal migration. Heat waves severely harm masonry and outdoor construction workers in India by causing dangerous physical health strain, lowering daily productivity, and cutting into household earnings. Here, masons build a concrete roof without any safety equipment. Mason workers are using a concrete mixer with a ladder lift to mix cement and hoist wet concrete to upper floors. To create a concrete roof, they build supports with wooden and bamboo poles to prevent collapse. They lay a strong mesh of rebars with cover blocks for the correct height. Laborers are carrying baskets of sand and coarse aggregates on their heads, then mix with cement and water, then pour and level the mixture evenly, working dangerously close to electric wires in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on August 31, 2026.
