In 2023, a glacial lake outburst flood in North Sikkim left thousands homeless and caused numerous casualties. Recent Chinese involvement in a Teesta River project in Bangladesh has raised security concerns for India. The Border Roads Organisation and NHIDCL continue to work in regions adjacent to the Teesta River to ensure the road remains undamaged by future floods and nearby settlements are safeguarded.
