Garh Panchkot, meaning “Fort of the Five Clans”, is a historic, ruined fort and palace complex located at the foothills of the Panchet Hills in the Purulia district. Built around 940 A.D. by the Singh Deo dynasty, it served as a capital for over 800 years until it was destroyed during the 18th-century Bargi (Maratha) attacks. The site contains the remnants of the Panchkot Raj family palace and several temples, including the intricately designed Pancharatna temple. It reflects a blend of Shaktism and Vaishnavism, with temples in both Bishnupuri style (dedicated to Krishna) and older stone block temples (dedicated to Kali). A nearby Jain cave further highlights the religious tolerance of the rulers. Today, Garh Panchkot is valued for its rich heritage, situated near the Panchet Dam on the Damodar River, and the area features a crescent-shaped hill, dense forests, and a serene, rustic environment.
