Cyanobacteria, scientifically known as blue-green algae and most commonly from the genus Nostoc such as Nostoc commune, form green, jelly-like masses on roads and pathways during the rainy season. Although locally referred to as "green plants" or "moss" due to their appearance, they are photosynthetic bacteria that thrive in high-moisture environments. During dry months, Nostoc shrivels into a crisp, dark, paper-thin layer on the ground that goes completely unnoticed. When the monsoon rains begin and constant dampness sets in, these colonies rapidly absorb water, swelling up into highly visible, plump, gelatinous green or brownish-green blobs. The jelly-like texture comes from a thick, slimy sheath made of polysaccharides that protects the bacteria. This slick layer dramatically reduces friction on concrete, brick, and asphalt roads, creating a severe skidding hazard for pedestrians and two-wheelers.
