Rice winnowing - Traditional rice processing - Parboiled rice production in India - 09/03/2026

An elderly woman winnows rice using a winnowing tray, locally known as a kuloko, kula, soop, or sup in India, a traditional agricultural method that separates edible rice grains from lightweight waste such as husks and chaff. The process involves placing a mixture of rice and husks in a handwoven tray and tossing the parboiled rice mixture into the air, ideally on a light breeze, so the wind carries away the lightweight chaff and husks while the heavier, clean rice kernels fall back down into the tray. The woman checks to see if further winnowing is required and finally collects the rice, placing it into a container and sweeping away the husks with a broom at Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on September 3, 2026.
