The Salamabad Trade Centre in Uri, which once served as a key facility for India-Pakistan cross-LoC trade, is set to be utilised for tourism after the trade route was suspended several years ago. The infrastructure at Salamabad has remained largely unused since the suspension of cross-LoC trade between India and Pakistan. The centre was linked to the cross-LoC trading route through the Aman Setu at Uri and had provided livelihood opportunities to several local families. However, with trade across the LoC no longer operational, the facility has remained largely idle. The move to utilise the centre for tourism is aimed at putting the existing infrastructure to productive use and creating fresh economic opportunities for people living in the border area. The proposed tourism use could also give a new role to the Salamabad-Aman Setu area, which was earlier associated primarily with cross-LoC trade between India and Pakistan.
