An inchworm, or looper, a stick-like caterpillar belonging to the Geometridae moth family, clings to a Rangoon creeper or Burma creeper (Combretum indicum) vine in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on September 10, 2026. The caterpillar mimics a small twig or stem to hide from predators, gripping the plant with its rear prolegs and holding its body rigid and straight out. Geometrid larvae move in a distinctive looping motion by bringing their back end close to the front. The similarity in color and pattern between the caterpillar and the plant's branch creates the appearance of camouflage, protecting it from hungry predators like birds. The insect is considered a pest that feeds on the leaves, buds, and fruits of trees, shrubs, and garden plants.
