Yellow paper wasps (Polistes olivaceus), Oriental fruit flies (Bactrocera dorsalis), flies, and ants feed on mango remains dropped by bats at Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on June 4, 2026. Bats eat mangoes from the tree and drop the remains, including pits, onto the ground. Flying foxes and fruit bats grab a mango, fly to a nearby perch or stay in the tree, eat the best flesh, and drop the rest. Yellow paper wasps and other wasps have a strong sugar craving, particularly during the late season of their colony, and mango juice is a readily available treat for them, especially from ripe, damaged, or fallen mangoes. Ants are drawn to the rich sugars for quick colony energy, while flies are attracted to the fermenting juices to eat and lay eggs.
