Indian Mango - Mango Export

Mango farmers and pickers cut the stalks of raw mangoes to allow the sap to drain, arranging the fruits in rows on a jute sack. The mangoes are then stored in baskets lined with leaves in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on May 26, 2026. Raw mango sap contains urushiol and other irritating compounds (latex that oozes out when the stem or pedicel is broken) and is a caustic, acidic fluid that can cause skin irritation, red welts, itching, blisters, burns, and allergic reactions. It can also cause "mango lip" or "mango mouth" if it gets on the lips or mouth. India leads the world in mango production, accounting for over 40% of global output, and generates the highest export value per kilogram. The sap, which contains urushiol, is drained to prevent sap injury and to avoid feeding decay-causing bacteria and fungi during transport and storage.
