In 2017 the European Commission declared May 21 as the European Natura 2000 Day to to mark the 25th anniversary of the EU Habits Directive. The Natura 2000 is a network of protected nature areas. The Middle Vistula Valley which runs through Warsaw is one of the 5300 designated Natura 2000 areas in Poland and is home to many different species of birds, untouched islands and river banks.
