A supporter raises an image of Our Lady of Aparecida, Brazil’s patron saint, adorned with rosaries and a Lula campaign sticker, above the crowd celebrating the reelection of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, of the Workers’ Party (PT), on Paulista Avenue, and tells the camera: “Don’t mess with Lula, because he is her son.” The saint entered the campaign after a false claim spread online that Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party (PL), planned to strip her of the title of Brazil’s patron saint; the Superior Electoral Court ordered platforms to remove posts making the claim, and Bolsonaro raised an image of the saint at a rally in São Paulo to rebut it. A man lights a flare, and another supporter, in a red cap, tells the camera: “A kiss to you all, Lula is four-time champion!” Lula won a fourth term with 51.79% of valid votes, against 48.21% for Bolsonaro, after a tense count in which Bolsonaro led early on. Bolsonaro said he would not recognize the result and would seek to annul the election, citing a two-hour nationwide extension of voting ordered by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin at the request of Lula’s campaign, although his own campaign had also asked for extra voting time in 17 cities.
