Two flesh flies (Sarcophagidae), from the genus Sarcophaga, are engaging in mating on weed leaves in a forest at Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on October 2, 2026. Flesh flies are commonly associated with decaying organic matter and are often found near carcasses and garbage. Flesh flies are ovoviviparous, meaning they deposit live maggots or hatching larvae instead of eggs. As necrophagous scavengers, flesh fly larvae accelerate the breakdown and recycling of dead animals, dung, and rotting organic refuse.
