Karez draws groundwater, turning the desert into an oasis known in ancient times as a "well canal". The main working principle of the Kanat is that people use the natural slope of the mountain to draw out the surface of a large amount of rainwater, glacier and snow melt water that seeps into the ground in spring and summer, so as to meet the demand of production and living water in the desert area.
