Thousands protest in Warsaw, Poland on 14 June, 2023. Poland has some of the world's strictest abortion laws and in 2020 the Constitutional Tribunal passed a ruling stating that abortions due to foetal defects are unconstitutional. The law has caused fear amongst medical professionals for potential criminal prosecution in case they perform abortions even when the procedure might save a woman's life. Since the 2020 ruling six women have died in Polish hospitals after doctors refused abortions. The deaths have led to protests across the country by people who oppose the law and women who fear for their lives should they have pregnancy complications.
